Marriage License Requirements in Brandon

Both people must show up together. You cannot send just one person. Bring a valid photo ID. A driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID all work. You also need your Social Security number. The physical card is not required. Just know the number and be ready to provide it.

Both applicants must be at least 18 under Florida Statute 741.04. A 17-year-old can apply with parental consent if the other person is within two years of age. No blood test is needed in Florida. There is no residency requirement either. Out-of-state visitors can get a marriage license at the Brandon office just like Hillsborough County residents.

If you were married before, you have to provide the date the previous marriage ended. The clerk needs to know if it ended by divorce, death, or annulment. You must also read the Family Law Handbook from the Florida Bar. The clerk will ask about it during the application.

Brandon Marriage License Fees

The fee is $86. This is the same at every Hillsborough County location. It is set by state law, not by the county. If both applicants complete a four-hour premarital course, the fee drops to $61. Under Florida Statute 741.0305, both people need to bring their completion certificates to get the lower rate.

The Hillsborough Clerk also offers courthouse ceremonies for $30. This is a civil ceremony performed by the clerk at one of the office locations, including the Brandon branch. A duplicate marriage license costs $30, and certified copies are $3 each. Part of the fee goes to the state Domestic Violence Trust Fund and part goes to the State Courts Revenue Trust Fund.

Wait Period and Brandon License Validity

There is a three-day waiting period for Florida residents. After the clerk gives you the license, three days must pass before the ceremony can happen. The premarital course waives this wait. Out-of-state residents do not have a wait at all.

Once the license becomes valid, you have 60 days to use it. This comes from Florida Statute 741.041. If 60 days pass without a ceremony, the license expires. You would need to come back to the Brandon office, apply again, and pay the full fee. After your wedding, the officiant returns the signed license to the Hillsborough Clerk within 10 days. That is how the marriage becomes part of the official record.

Note: The three-day count starts the day after the clerk issues the license, not the same day.

Ceremony Options for Brandon Couples

Florida Statute 741.07 lists who can perform a marriage ceremony. Judges, ordained ministers, clerks of the circuit court, and notary publics are all allowed. You pick whoever you want. The Hillsborough Clerk offers a $30 civil ceremony at the courthouse. Many Brandon couples use this option for a quick and simple wedding.

You can also have the ceremony at a church, a park, a private home, or anywhere else. A Brandon marriage license works in any Florida county. The location of the ceremony does not matter. Just make sure the officiant knows to return the signed license to the Hillsborough Clerk within 10 days. The clerk then files it and sends the record to the Florida Department of Health for the state's permanent records.
