Filing a Marriage License in Doral

Doral is part of Miami-Dade County, so the county clerk handles all marriage license filings. Florida does not issue marriage licenses at the city level. The Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts processes these records at their main office and branch locations throughout the county. Under Florida Statute 741.01, the clerk of the circuit court has sole authority to issue marriage licenses in each county.

For Doral residents, the most straightforward option is the main clerk's office in downtown Miami. Some of the branch locations also handle marriage license applications, though not every branch offers this service. Call ahead to check if a specific branch near Doral takes marriage applications. The main number for the Miami-Dade Clerk is (305) 275-1155. A marriage license from Miami-Dade County is valid anywhere in the state of Florida, so your ceremony can take place in Doral, on the beach, or in any other city.

Note: A marriage license issued in Miami-Dade County lets you hold the ceremony in any of Florida's 67 counties.

Doral Marriage License Requirements

Both people must go to the clerk's office in person. You cannot send one person alone. Bring a valid photo ID such as a driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID. You also need your Social Security number. The card itself is not required, but you must know the number. Under Florida Statute 741.04, both applicants must be at least 18 years old. A 17-year-old can apply only with parental consent and only when the other person is no more than two years older.

If either person was married before, bring the exact date the previous marriage ended. You need to know whether it ended by divorce, death, or annulment. No blood test is needed. Florida dropped that rule back in 1986. There is no residency requirement either. You do not have to live in Doral or anywhere in Florida to get a marriage license from Miami-Dade County.

Before you apply, both applicants should read the Family Law Handbook from the Florida Bar. The clerk will ask if you have read it. If you and your partner have children born in Florida together, the clerk may need additional paperwork, specifically an Affirmation of Common Children form. Staff at the office can help with that form on the spot.

Marriage License Fees in Doral

The fee for a marriage license is $86. This is the same across all of Miami-Dade County and is set by Florida law. If both applicants complete a four-hour premarital course before applying, the fee drops to $61. That saves you $25. The course also waives the three-day waiting period for Florida residents, as laid out in Florida Statute 741.0305.

Part of the fee goes to the Domestic Violence Trust Fund and part goes to the State Courts Revenue Trust Fund. The clerk also charges fees for related services. A courthouse ceremony costs $30. Certified copies of the marriage license cost a few dollars each. The Miami-Dade Clerk accepts cash and credit cards at most locations. Check with the specific office you plan to visit about their payment options.

Doral Marriage License Wait and Validity

Florida residents face a three-day waiting period. After the clerk issues the license, you must wait three full days before holding the ceremony. The license is not valid during those three days. If both people are from out of state, there is no wait. And if you complete the premarital preparation course, the wait goes away for residents too.

Once the license becomes valid, it stays good for 60 days. That is set by Florida Statute 741.041. You need to have the wedding ceremony within that 60-day window. If the license expires, you start over with a new application and a new fee. After the ceremony, the person who performs it must return the signed license to the clerk within 10 days. The clerk then files it with the Florida Department of Health for the state's permanent records.

Note: Premarital courses must be at least four hours and taken from an approved provider to count toward the fee reduction and wait waiver.

Ceremony Options for Doral Couples

Under Florida Statute 741.07, several types of people can perform a marriage ceremony. Judges, clerks of the circuit court, ordained ministers, and notary public officials all have the authority. You can have the ceremony at the courthouse for $30, or you can pick any location you like. Doral has parks, event venues, and private spaces that work well for weddings of all sizes.

The officiant signs the marriage license after the ceremony. They then send it back to the Miami-Dade Clerk for recording. This step is important. Without it, the marriage is not on file. Make sure your officiant knows they have 10 days to return the completed license. After recording, the Florida Clerks network and the Department of Health both maintain records of the marriage.
