How to Get a Marriage License in Pembroke Pines

Both people must show up in person at the same time. You cannot send one person ahead or apply by mail. Bring a valid photo ID. The clerk accepts a driver's license, state ID, passport, or U.S. military ID. You also need your Social Security number, but you do not need the card itself. The Florida Court Clerks & Comptrollers site lays out all the state requirements for applying.

If you or your partner were married before, bring the exact date the prior marriage ended. Know whether it ended by divorce, death, or annulment. The clerk will ask for the state and county where the divorce took place. Under Florida Statute 741.04, both people must be at least 18 years old. A 17-year-old can apply with consent from both parents, but the other person cannot be more than two years older.

You must read the Family Law Handbook before you apply. The Florida Bar has it in English, Spanish, and Creole. The Broward Clerk's office asks if you have read it when you apply. If you have children born in Florida together, you also need to fill out an Affirmation of Common Children form at the office.

You can also search for existing marriage licenses through the Broward Clerk license search tool if you need to look up a record that has already been filed.

Pembroke Pines Marriage License Fees

The standard fee is $86. This is the same at all Broward County offices. If both people take a four-hour premarital preparation course, the fee drops to $61. That saves you $25. The course also skips the three-day waiting period that Florida residents face. Under Florida Statute 741.0305, this reduction applies when you bring the original certificate of completion to the clerk.

Other fees at the Broward Clerk for Pembroke Pines residents include a $30 charge for a courthouse ceremony, $30 for a duplicate license, and $3 for each certified copy. An administration of oath costs $3.50. The clerk accepts cash and credit cards. Personal checks may not be accepted at all locations, so bring cash or a card to be safe.

Note: The $86 fee includes a portion that goes to the Florida Domestic Violence Trust Fund as set by state law.

Waiting Period for Pembroke Pines Couples

Florida residents face a three-day wait. The marriage license is not valid until three days after the clerk issues it. This rule comes from Florida Statute 741.04. You cannot hold the ceremony during those three days.

You can skip the wait in two ways. First, if both people take a premarital course from a registered provider, the license becomes valid right away. Check the Broward Clerk premarital provider list to find an approved course near Pembroke Pines. Second, if both people live outside of Florida, there is no waiting period at all. Out-of-state couples get their license the same day they apply.

Once the license becomes valid, it stays good for 60 days. Under Florida Statute 741.041, you must hold the ceremony within that window. If 60 days pass without a wedding, the license expires and you have to start over with a new fee.

After Your Pembroke Pines Wedding

After the ceremony, the person who performed the marriage sends the signed license back to the Broward County Clerk. This must happen within 10 days. The clerk files and records it. A copy then goes to the Florida Department of Health Bureau of Vital Statistics for permanent filing. That process takes about 60 days. Under Florida Statute 741.07, ordained ministers, judicial officers, clerks, and notaries public can all perform marriages in the state.

If you want a courthouse ceremony in the Pembroke Pines area, the Broward Clerk offers them for $30. Two witnesses are needed.
